City cruise to Oldham victory

Exeter City continued their excellent late season form with a routine 2-0 victory over Oldham at St James`s Park.

The victory prologues the Grecians` hopes of snatching the final play-off spot. This was a fifth straight victory for City who are the form side in the league and are putting some pressure on Bournemouth who are currently holding sixth place.

On a glorious day in Devon in truth Exeter had this game sewn up by half time thanks to goals from Scott Golbourne and Jamie Cureton.

Oldham`s challenge has faded in the second half of the season and they looked a shadow of the side that raced into a 3-0 lead when the sides met earlier in the seaoson.

Paul Tisdale has got his side playing with a freedom of late that has led to City playing some attractive football at St James` Park and this game was no different.

The only surprise was the identity of the first goal scorer. Golbourne cut in off the right-flank and his low shot evaded Dean Brill in the Oldham goal and clipped the post on its way into the net – the defenders second goal of the season.

With Oldham putting up limited resistance City snatched a somewhat soft second goal three minutes before the break. John O`Flynn was allowed too much time and his sliced shot fell perfectly for Cureton who slammed the ball home for his twentieth goal of the season.

The tempo predictably slowed in the second-half as City wilted in the heat.

An improved Oldham tested City stopper Ben Hamer late on, but the keeper – playing the final game of his loan spell from Reading – was equal to the task on two occasions.

City closed out the game with consummate ease to extend their winning streak to five, much to the delight of most the 5,458 inside the ground.

The only bad news for City was that Leyton Orient scored a late winner against Peterborough to remain above the Grecians in the table.
