Exeter were defeated by our Premier League visitors on Saturday but we made them work for it as they had to come from behind.

We took a one nil lead into the half time break in the game as David Wheeler opened the scoring on the day just after the half hour mark, but second half strikes from Dan Gosling and Junior Stanislas gave Eddie Howe’s boys the win.

Summer signings goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik and Troy Brown made it into the starting eleven with Manny Oyeleke on the bench. Trialist Will Hoskins was also in the match day party and there would have been plenty of positives once more from the overall performance and the fitness elements we’d have got out of the tough test – especially as we started as the brighter side although Bournemouth did grow into the match.

Promising signs in attack though with the chances we created and positivity at the back as well in terms of how we defended for large parts.

Exeter:

Olejnik (Pym 70), Davies (Watkins 70), Ribeiro (Read 70), Brown (Tillson 60), McAllister (Riley-Lowe), Noble (McCready 46), Harley (Oyeleke 60), Oakley (Butterfield 60), Holmes (Nichols 65), Wheeler (Reid 65), Nichols (Hoskins 65).

Goal: Wheeler (32).

AFC Bournemouth first half:

Federici, Smith, Cook, Distin, Mings, Pugh, O`Kane, Surman, Atsu, King, Rantie.

AFC Bournemouth second half:

Allsop, Francis, Cargill, Elphick, Daniels, Stanislas, MacDonald, Gosling, Ritchie, Wilson, Kermorgant.

Unused sub: Ward.

Goals: Gosling (51), Stanilslas (76).

Attendance: 2,125 (360 away).

Referee: Lee Swabey.

Player coach Danny Butterfield gave his thoughts following the game to the Official Site.

‘The lads did well today. I think it`s another step towards building people towards the first game of the season, minutes-wise. It was a good test for us with them now being a Premier League team. So perhaps they offered us a little taste of a different way that we might need to play – getting bodies behind the ball and try to be solid and try to counter-attack. All in all it was a good workout and good experience for a lot of the young boys that have got that under their belt now.’
