Midfielder Matt Grimes has said he’s already relishing his second season as a professional at Exeter and he can’t wait for the 2014-15 campaign to roll around.

The youngster actually celebrates his 19th birthday on the day that we host Reading in the arranged pre season friendly at St James Park, and having admitted that he’s enjoyed a very good rest so far in the off season, he told the Official Site that he was now working on his summer fitness programme because he’s determined to return in good shape to kick on further and build on his 37 appearances from last term.

‘We’ve had a nice break and I’m enjoying our time off, and now I’m already starting my summer programme to keep in good shape. Now I’m already looking forward to next season and everything it entails. I hope that we can all pull together and play like we did in our good spells from last season, and carry that through for the whole season rather than drifting off a bit.’

As for the friendlies we have arranged, he says that facing teams like Reading and Swansea will provide us with a very good test, and for the youngsters in our ranks especially, like him, playing that calibre of opposition can only help them learn and develop further and obviously that’s what it’s all about for our Player of the Year.

Having had a good season, he wasn’t alone in terms of youngsters stepping up and he added.

‘I’m really happy with the work done last year and how everything has gone for me, and I’m just looking forward to taking that into next year. There were a lot of players last season that didn’t have too much experience and we were looking to make the step up, but we’ve played a lot of games between us now and we’re looking forward to showing everyone what we can do.’

Grimes adds that with that lack of experience, it did mean they were all hit and miss at points, but consistency comes though playing games and they did all get a good number of matches under their belts, and although they are far from the finished product, he believes fans will see improvements from each of them as next season progresses.

Obviously Grimes has been subject of a fair bit of speculation in recent weeks following his performances, he admits it’s very flattering but ultimately he expects to be at Exeter next season and that’s all he’s focusing on.
