Goal scorer Alex Nicholls has hailed the performance of his team mates in the Capital One Cup victory over Swindon Town in midweek.

Having scored the opener for us on the day and more than played his part in creating the second goal, Nicholls told the Official Site that he felt it had been a fantastic team performance by everyone – especially defensively on the evening.

‘We came to Swindon knowing it would be tough, and we knew that they would have a lot of the ball, because of the way they set themselves up. But we came with a gameplan and executed it very well. We wanted to try and sit off them, to let them have the ball at the back and to force them into doing things that they didn’t want to, frustrating them in the process.’

Nicholls said we managed to do that successfully across the game, but he went on to praise the discipline of the players in sticking to the plan and not getting sidetracked and with that focus he felt we defended excellently.

It wasn’t just defensive praise Nicholls had though, he also heaped praise on his almost namesake, Tom.

‘Tommy has been brilliant through the whole of pre-season, and in both of the games we’ve had this season there have been times where he has got a hold of the ball and shown his strength, and that’s exactly what he did to set me up, which did a lot of the work for me before I went through and beat the keeper. I felt I had to hit it early, because the defender was covering quite quickly on my right-hand side – I thought that if I took another touch, it might give him the opportunity to come in and nick it, so I took it early and it went in. For the second goal, I didn’t quite get enough purchase on my shot to beat the keeper, but Dave and Tom were both there for the rebound, so happy days.’

He ended by saying that manager Paul Tisdale and and Mel Gwinnett are always going on about him needing to show more confidence in his own abilities when he’s on the ball, and that’s what he tried to show in the build up to the second goal so he felt it had been a good shift for him, getting one and an assist on the day, and hopefully there’d be more to come from him on both of those fronts.
