Midfielder Matt Oakley has committed to St James’ Park for another 12 months having signed the deal the 37 year old had on the table.

Our senior and experienced player now begins his fourth campaign at the club since penning a permanent deal back in 2012 and with many of his 638 career appearances coming in the Premiership with Southampton and Derby County he is the most experienced member of the playing squad.

His Exeter tally so far stands at 116 appearances, and 48 of those came last year as he missed only one game in his midfield and defensive roles.

Speaking to the Official Site manager Paul Tisdale explained his delight at securing the player for another season.

‘Matt played more minutes than anyone else last season – for someone of his age to be able to play over 90 per cent of all the minutes in a season is quite an achievement. It is a long season and there will be a time when there is a dip in energy – but on the whole last season he was exceptional and he brings a lot of experience and knowledge. I want to get every last drop out of him that I can!’

Tisdale ends by saying that hopefully we can get another year out of him like we did last term and he can go on to play a similar influential role with that many games on the pitch, as well as the role he plays in the dressing room with the younger lads.
