Exeter have announced they are waiving their 50% share for the pre season friendly against Torquay United.

We head to Plainmoor to meet our National League local neighbours later this week for the friendly and the club’s decision to leave them with the full gate receipt from the day is a return of a favour they gave Exeter 12 years ago for those with long memories.

Then Torquay chairman Mike Bateson made the same gesture to us back in 2003 when we had financial problems of our own and our Chairman Julian Tagg explained to the Official Site that we hadn’t forgot the ‘fantastic gesture’ they gave us and it’s only right that we nod back in their direction now we’re in a position to.

‘We remember only too well the situation we were in back in 2003 and we have not forgotten the terrific gesture by Mike Bateson and Torquay United when they agreed to waive their right to a share of the gate receipts in what was our hour of need. We have always maintained a fantastic relationship with Torquay and we sympathise with their current situation. We hope the new regime can bring stability to the club and return them to the Football League in the very near future, so we can commence our great rivalry in a more competitive environment.’

A fantastic decision by the club that I’m sure has been warmly greeted by all, as Torquay’s was all those years ago. As let’s face it – it’s not like we’re overly flush with cash either given the money that is in football these days but sometimes some gestures need to go over and above that.
