After dominatating the opening exchanges and taking an early lead, City slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Accrington.
Exeter led on five minutes when Craig McAllister set up Adam Stansfield for his 10th goal of the season.
But after Accrington keeper Kenny Arthur made a great save from McAllister John Miles curled home an equaliser before Craig Lindfield scored the winner on 64 minutes to cap a miserable afternoon up North for City.
