David Wheeler has today signed a new contract at St James Park.

A key player for manager Paul Tisdale this year, the forward has now signed a deal that will keep him with us until beyond the summer – I can’t find it stated but it’s got to be either a 12 month or an 18 month to take him to the summer of 2017 presumably.

The 25 year old has been with us since 2013 and he’s recently passed the 100 appearance mark. This year has seen him take in 26 appearances with a return of seven goals and it is his best year in front of the net so far in his career.

The Exeter Express and Echo have Tisdale saying that whilst the player wants to play at a higher level, he doesn’t see why he can’t spearhead our promotion charge this year and make it happen.

‘He has ingratiated himself at the club during the past couple of season and he has improved very quickly. I would like to think that improvement will continue now he has committed himself here over a longer period of time. He started this season still not guaranteed a starting slot in our team, but he earned it very quickly. He has gone from 12 months ago, being in and out of the team, to being a fundamental part of it. It shows a big improvement. He is scored goals and he has contributed in all areas of the pitch and he has really found his feet. I would like to think that he has the potential to move to League One with a promotion with Exeter City during the time-frame of his new contract or find himself with a move by continuing his development. He is a big element of our team when he is fit and I would like to think that he’ll be back playing, fully fit, in the next week or two.’

The player was into his final six months of his existing deal.
