Exeter would have hoped to get back on track against league 2 basement boys Hartlepool United at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, although it was the strugglers that won 2-1 to move themselves off the foot of the table.

Hartlepool ‘keeper Scott Flinders saved both of England U20 international Matt Grimes’ efforts as we had the opening chances to go ahead.

We did have to be thankful to the crossbar though, Hartlepool’s Dan Jones was denied a goal, and a chance to give the visitors a half time lead, when his effort smacked the bar.

The visitors didn’t take long to breakthrough after the break though with poor defending allowing Michael Duckworth to cross to Michael Woods (49) who volleyed past our other England U20 international Christy Pym.

The defending left little to be desired as we again made it too easy for Hartlepool allowing Charlie Wyke (66) to take advantage to beat Pym against and give them a two-nil lead.

A nervy final 10-minutes was set-up when Christian Ribeiro (80) headed home to bring us back into the game but despite a late scare, when Scot Bennett headed a David Wheeler cross over, we weren’t able to force a draw.
